“Ten bedroomed 1920s mansion perched on a totally unspoilt stretch of coastline, with superb views of the English Channel. This seafront hotel offers traditionally decorated rooms, a restaurant, bar, library with games and a first floor lounge with telescope. Perfect for a quiet getaway.”

Romney Bay House, Romney Marsh, Kent: hotel review

The sea, embraced in St Mary’s Bay, is nearly always soothingly calm, with an enigmatic Mulberry Harbour plainly visible in the middle distance.

Checking in

Driving along the heavily potholed road, sea on one side, gloomy weatherbeaten houses on the other, and the hazy outline of Dungeness nuclear power station behind us, I'm convinced I've taken a wrong turn. But no, there it is - Romney Bay House, an imposing white building with a red roof and the stern, slightly clinical air of a sanatorium. This severe impression doesn't last.
