Hotel Overview

“The Georgian building, partially ivy-covered and with handsome sash windows and grand pillared entrance, certainly catches the eye. Not surprisingly it was home to some of York's wealthiest families, and cleverly sits just outside the walls yet within easy walking distance of the major sights - 10 minutes to the Minster. Privately owned, its interiors have a contemporary townhouse style - moodily coloured walls, velvet upholstery, designer lighting - that nevertheless doesn't detract from its Georgian grandeur of dado panelling, gilt-framed horse-racing pictures and sweeping staircase.
Bedrooms - with many on the ground floor - range from classic country-house to contemporary townhouse. All have been carefully styled so they feel inviting without feeling cluttered; even the smallest rooms feel smart and stylish.
The vaulted cellar restaurant is modern and atmospheric, though the quality of the cooking can be over-ambitious. Our tip is to choose the table d'hote menu to get the best value for money.”
