Hotel Review

An airy and colourful hotel with eclectically furnished rooms, bold modern art and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Beautifully cooked breakfasts, free parking and ten minutes from York Minster. Tucked down a residential side street, off the foodie haunt of Walmgate, this former rectory belies its staid red-brick exterior. In 2013, sisters Sophie and Maria Scott took over what had latterly become a run-down hotel, and turned it into bright and light accommodation with bold colours, contemporary art and clever mixes of vintage and modern furniture. Their artist father’s abstract paintings line the creamy-tiled hall and open staircase while rooms are styled with a confident eye for colour: a yellow four-poster bed against eau-de-nil walls or a sea-blue armchair next to a green angle-poise lamp. You might find an Ercol sofa or antique desk next to a plain wardrobe jollied up with colourful china door-knobs. All rooms have fresh milk and coffee machines; most have baths as well as showers. Guests can bring wine to drink in the sitting room with its wood-burning stove, vintage sofas and wall of books. For warmer days, there's a gravelled courtyard garden. Breakfast, in the spacious conservatory-style dining room is a delight with home-poached fruits, and mix-and-match cooked items, prepared to order. For dinner, The Press Kitchen, two minutes’ away on Walmgate, has creative dishes, interesting wines and a fantastic juke box.

The Parisi Hotel

The Parisi Hotel is a real find in a city well served by independent hotels and b&bs. Owned and run by ethically minded sisters Sophie and Maria Scott (LED light bulbs and low carbon footprint are high on their list of priorities), it's a pleasing, tranquil hodgepodge of colours, designs and styles.
