Hotel Review

Has the name piqued your interest? Well, you will not be disappointed. A trip to picturesque and beautiful Russell on the tip of the Bay of Islands is in itself a wonderful not-to-be-missed New Zealand experience, but is enhanced considerably when you can stay in a private house with one of the very best views in the district. You will also have all the entertainment of meeting the owners Mark and Angelique Richards, who are fizzing with fun and passionate about their adopted country. Tiki Tiki Ora (meaning Embrace Life) reflects a lifetime of travels and eclecticism. There is a vintage juke box and pin ball machine, a Harley Davidson in the garage, books on every subject, military medals with fully researched histories, and much much more besides. If this sounds overwhelming don’t worry because the 3 comfortable and private bedrooms downstairs are fresh and white and bright, fully ensuite, with plenty of fluffy towels, bath robes and cupboard space. Breakfast is served on the wrap-around veranda upstairs. There is also a yoga temple (mats provided) where you can worship the lovely New Zealand sunshine and listen to the dawn chorus. A short drive down the hill takes you into Russell where you can stroll along the seafront, dipping in and out of the many tempting local shops and boutiques. The super-yacht brigade like to moor up here, but this pretty little town caters for all. There are masses of great restaurants and cafés for lunch and dinner, including NZ’s oldest hostelry – The Duke of Marlborough. One night here is not really enough as you will be utterly seduced by the relaxed charm of the place.
