Hotel Review

“With gardens bordered by the city’s Norman walls and overlooked by the medieval cathedral, the sense of history here is palpable. This is definitely a family home, albeit a rather grand Georgian one. Russell – who lives here with his wife Katie – grew up here, and the place is dotted with family photographs, mementoes and heirlooms. The bedrooms are comfortable and welcoming rather than designed, with a happy mis-match of contemporary and traditional furniture. The style may be a little dated but most are large, some with window-seats, and all but one overlooking the glorious south-facing gardens. Nice touches include bathrobes, filtered water, fresh milk and shelves of books. Be aware, one room shares a bathroom, but it’s priced accordingly. Two are in a self-contained apartment with sitting room, kitchen and conservatory; perfect for families.
Russell and Katie are relaxed hosts, treating guests as members of the family - picking them up from the station, and booking restaurants (Olivares tapas bar, a favourite). The city’s attractions are walkable which means you can quickly return to put your feet up – in the garden if it’s warm – and chatter to the free-ranging hens that lay the eggs for breakfast. The latter, with freshly prepared fruit salad, Greek yoghurt, homemade marmalade and any mix of cooked items, will set you up for the day.”
