With its excellent beaches, idyllic climate, numerous universities, rich cultural life, lively nightlife, and SeaWorld, San Diego definitely deserves a second look when it comes to selecting a city break in California. Right by the Mexican border, San Diego has a more colourful atmosphere than many Californian cities, and the best places to stay in San Diego reflect this.

San Diego is a great place to bring your family. And it’s not just Shamu at SeaWorld, there’s also an excellent zoo and safari park, a Legoland, some fantastic museums, safe, soft, sandy beaches and a lovely Old Town. If you choose the right season you can also expect bankable weather and friendly locals - properly friendly too!

It’s not just for kids though, there’s also plenty to do after hours, from restaurants to bars, clubs and theatre.

San Diego is an excellent place to give surfing a go, explore America’s maritime or military history and view some world class art. And this laid back, beautiful city also has some pretty impressive architecture to ogle.

This is a big city, so there’s plenty of choice when it comes to recommending the best places to stay in San Diego, but our Gurus have endeavoured to separate the great from the good so you don't have to.

The Best Places to Stay in San Diego

For boutique chic

  • The Andaz San Diego is a hip luxury hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter, which is lively spot for evenings out. The 159 rooms are plush and comfortable and there’s a rooftop restaurant and bar and a pool which turns into an open air cinema.
  • Tower 23 isn’t quite what it sounds - it’s not really a tower, but a beautifully designed three storey building right on the seafront. The 44 rooms have floor to ceiling sea views and there are in-room spa treatments to sample and a restaurant worth trying.

For the beach

  • La Valencia is a fair distance from the centre of town, but it's ideal if you want an ocean view, old world charm and a spot of R'n'R.

For golfers

  • If you've come to channel your inner Jack Niclaus, then book a room at the Lodge at Torrey Pines. It overlooks the course which has hosted the US Open Championships more than once and is well equipped if your other half would rather not hit the fairways.
