Glasgow Hotels

It might come as a surprise that we only feature three places to stay in or near Glasgow. It never ceases to surprise us that, in such a lively, young, buzzy city, with great art and architecture (including Foster & partners' Armadillo, pictured left), a vibrant nightlife and stylish shops, the hotel scene should be so lacklustre. Our recommendations – two hotels (one in the centre, one outside) and one bed-and-breakfast – are head and shoulders above the rest. However, things are looking up: Malmaison and ABode already have hotels in Glasgow, and at the end of 2007, they will be joined by a new luxury hotel and spa, when the much-loved RAC building in Blythswood Square opens its doors. The hotels are listed by price category, and their order bears no reflection on our preference.

Mar Hall
Luxury:  Handsome country house close to city centre
Location: Earl of Mar Estate, Bishopton; 20 minutes from city centre
Hotel Hotel
This 19th-century Gothic mansion on a 400-acre estate offers a very attractive alternative to staying in the city. The country-house feel and magnificent views over gardens to the River Clyde and the Kilpatrick Hills make it hard to believe that central Glasgow is only 20 minutes away. The handsome, deeply comfortable bedrooms all enjoy the views. There’s also an excellent dining room, courteous staff and a seductive Aveda spa.
Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens
Luxury:  Hotel du Vin meets One Devonshire Gardens in a happy marriage
Location: in the West End
Hotel Hotel
One Devonshire Gar dens opened in 1986 in the first of five splendid Victorian townhouses built for shipping merchants. Now it has been taken over by Hotel du Vin, our favourite UK hotel chain, and engulfs all five houses. Handsome and stylish, it has fine original staircases and stained glass. Though more luxurious and with more serious food than its sister hotels, the Hotel du Vin trademarks, including blissful beds, deep baths, huge showers and friendly service, remain firmly in place.
The Town House
Inexpensive:  Characterful B&B in fashionable West End
Location: Hughenden Terrace; in the West End
Hotel Hotel
On a peaceful terrace in the fashionable West End (with plenty of free parking), The Town House is Glasgow’s most welcoming B&B. A coal fire glows in winter in the cosy and immaculately-kept sitting room, where guests can enjoy a drink after a day in the city. Breakfast is the full Scottish variety and, although there is no formal dinner, excellent homemade soup and freshly made sandwiches can be brought to your room if you can’t face going out.
