Hotel Review

Willemstad in the Netherlands Antilles is something of a hidden gem in the Caribbean; boasting temperate weather year-round, the former Dutch colony is still relatively free from tourist crowds. The capital is peppered with well-preserved, Dutch-inspired colonial properties; these architectural gems now form an integral part of this Caribbean island's unique cultural heritage. Villa Tokara, officially classified as a local historical monument, is one such property. The colonial-era house was renovated around six years ago as part of its transformation into a boutique hotel, and the hoteliers have worked wonders to retain many original heritage features while injecting a contemporary and luxury feel. The hotel is set amidst a pretty, landscaped garden with a new swimming pool and poolside loungers. Inside, distressed wood and upcycled materials feature heavily in the interior design, alongside heritage tiles in the bright colours that Dutch-Caribbean architecture is renowned for. Eclectic artwork and unfussy ornaments add a homely feel to this guesthouse. In the guestrooms, clean lines are key; a feature wall introduces a pastel theme in the large double room, picked up in the soft furnishings. The same false wall cleverly doubles up to shield the private bathroom. Families are catered to in the larger family room, which features a separate single bed. The hotel highlight has to be the upper floor suite, with restored stained-glass windows, a spacious living room and balcony. With helpful hosts, a beautiful setting and well-appointed rooms, Villa Tokara will quickly come to feel like your own private island holiday home.
