“Surrounded by woodland and lawns on the outskirts of Ipswich, Kesgrave Hall has led a colourful life. Commandeered as an American Air force base during the Second World War, it gained a hangar (now converted for parties and weddings) before serving as a private school and a reform school. Derelict, it was rescued and lavishly refurbished in 2008. The headmaster’s house and science block (old stables) have been converted into luxurious bedrooms. Owner, Geraldine Milsom's interiors feature lots of bold fabrics, wooden floors, muted wall colours, art by East Anglian artists and great lighting. The 23 rooms are stylish and contemporary. Favourites are bedrooms are One and Two. The Brasserie is open all day and afternoon tea is served on the terrace on sunny days. The bar and restaurant of this popular local haunt are busiest on Saturday night. Expect local fish and meat on the menu; try the Spicy Harissa Sutton Hoo chicken with pomegranate couscous. And leave room for pudding.”
