Hotel Review

In an enviable position on the shores of Windermere, this landmark Victorian country-house hotel has been given a striking refurbishment. Rich details of the original mansion – built in 1890 for the wealthy widow of a Manchester businessman – have been cleverly retained while blending with 21st-century comforts. Stained-glass windows, oak panelling, plasterwork ceilings and ornate fireplaces form the backdrop to polished-wood floors, geometrically patterned rugs, sharply upholstered armchairs and fresh Lakeland colours of grey, blue, tan and cream.

Bedrooms follow the same colour scheme, are universally large and light, and spoil with marbled bathrooms, complimentary mini-bars and welcoming mini-cakes. All but two have lake views; those in the separate Lake House have a balcony or terrace while some of the suites have quirky features such as a corner turret.

Dining is either a smart affair – amuse-bouches, flavoured butters and dishes such as guinea fowl with wild mushrooms, and sea bass with curried mussels, served in the glass-walled restaurant – or posh comfort food - fish and chips, wagyu burgers – in one of the fire-warmed lounges. Afternoon tea is a hefty spread but, as with all the food and drink, comes with a hefty price tag. Still, the service is good with numerous staff who always seem to be there when you need someone.

Work off the food with strolls around the Thomas Mawson-designed gardens, watersports from the private pier, or even a spot of wild swimming. The hotel can arrange numerous activities, including sailing lessons, and off-road driving. Or you could just hole up in the private cinema with popcorn and ice cream.
