“Michelin recommended pub with rooms overlooking the River Avon. Food is exceptional with all ingredients either as local as possible or the best possible quality. Rooms pay great attention to detail and all have a lovely deck with river and countryside views.”

Hotel Review

Charming thatched pub and restaurant with rooms across the road. The food is award winning (3 AA Rosettes) and all ingredients are either made on site or claim to be either as local as possible or the best possible quality (all the langoustines are Scottish). The rooms are located within stumbling distance, across the road from the pub and all are stylishly decorated with a great eye for detail. Great touches include Bang & Olufsen super TVs and Somnus beds as standard. Plus each has an individual, private decking area with wonderful views both over the River Avon and the surrounding countryside. It really is the perfect country hideaway, where you can indulge yourself at night and walk off the calories the next day!

Why do people love staying in your hotel? The Red Lion Freehouse is a truly welcoming, professionally run country pub with comfortable and peaceful rooms across the road in luxury boutique guest house, Troutbeck. Staff look after guests well and it's hard not to relax and unwind in the peaceful riverside setting of Troutbeck. Returning guests frequently tell us how much they love the pub's incredible food, the celebrated Red Lion Breakfasts and the intimate and atmospheric dining room. The thoughtful extras are also often remarked on positively by returning guests: home-made snacks included in the price - fresh juice, milk and cordial; crisps, home-made biscuits and peanuts. Guests love the Information Book and how much detail it contains. We also have board games and cards in every room for rainy days, aspirin and condoms next to the bed...

What is there to do in the area? There's tons to do in the area. Take a peek at our website to see all that is on offer - but to list a few: local private fishing on the River Avon (on the doorstep), walking in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside (East Chisenbury is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and this part of the River Avon is a Site of Specific Scientific Interest). Local activities and sites include: Stonehenge, the City of Salisbury, The White Horse Trekking Centre, Longleat Safari Park & House, a number of local shooting clubs and shoots, Avebury Manor & Stone Circle, Pewsey Carnival, Thruxton Circuit...

What kind of breakfast do you offer? Help yourself to our Chisenbury breakfast - a spread that comes exclusively from local villagers and suppliers. If you're feeling precious, the Bloody Mary & Bucks Fizz are on us. Hot Love from the Kitchen: Smoked salmon & scrambled RL eggs Trealy Farm Bacon & RL eggs Waffles with Henge honey RL Eggs Benedict The Full English

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served in the pub - all ingredients are very carefully sourced (the motto is, either it's local or it's the best eg veggies from Bottlesford down the road, or it's the best for example Scottish langoustines) and cooked up with exceptional skill by chef Guy Manning (previously of New York's Per Se, London's Chez Bruce and San Sebastien's famous Martin Berasategui's), who heads up the kitchen. The kitchen is always delighted to pack up a picnic hamper for guests wanting to head out for the day and can also recommend a few local places to enjoy a different meal. People travel from far and wide to enjoy the excellent food at the pub in the first place (so why eat anywhere else?) but for those who want to venture out further afield, Jade Chinese and Thai Sarocha, both in Salisbury get Guy & Brittany's endorsement. Tompson's Deli in nearby Pewsey is also a nice place to pop into.

Which are your most popular room types, and why? All the rooms have private decking leading onto the banks of the river Avon and are uniquely decorated. All rooms are furnished to the highest level with hand-picked and bespoke furniture, Bang & Olufsen electronics, organic toiletries, minibars and stunning views. the Benjamin Suite is much loved because of its light and spacious feel, a walk-in rain shower and a roll-top bath from which you can enjoy the river and countryside view.

What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers? This is somewhere guests can truly unwind and indulge themselves. The accolades say it all: 3 AA Rosettes, AA 5 stars and Gold Star Award, Sawday's 'Best Pub with Rooms Award 2014'.
