Fifty kilometres from the regional capital of Trier, the beautiful medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues lies nestled in the verdant Moselle Valley. The town now stretches across both sides of the river in what has become a largely agricultural part of Rhineland-Palatinate, but humans have lived in the area since at least 3000BC. Modern-day visitors will find some charming B&Bs and guesthouses in town, but our Gurus’ pick of the best places to stay in Bernkastel-Kues is a wellness retreat amidst the nearby fields and vineyards.
Amble around the cobbled streets of the old town to admire half-timbered medieval houses, many of which are brightly painted and well preserved. The Marktplatz is a brilliant starting point, with the ornate Rathaus and famously narrow Spitzhäuschen — now housing a characterful wine bar — are in easy reach. The 14th-century Graachertor gate’s small museum is also well worth visiting.
Clamber up to the ruins of Landshut Castle or to the Skywalk for dazzling views; or enjoy hiking and cycling along the trails which criss-cross the Kueser Plateau. The Moselle Valley has long been famed for its wonderful wines; tours and tastings at nearby vineyards come highly recommended, as do stops at the Vinotheque Bernkastel. The Christmas Market has a reputation for being amongst the most magical in Germany — book your room at one of the best places to stay in Bernkastel-Kues well in advance if travelling in December!
