About Dodecanese

One of the great appeals of the Dodecanese Islands is their diversity. So it's quite a challenge to decide the best places to stay in the Dodecanese for you.

Luckily our gurus are here to help you make your choice between:

  • Rhodes with its luxury, history and sightseeing;
  • Kos, with its particularly Greek vibe and 100kms worth of gorgeous coastline;
  • the spiritual Patmos;
  • and the smaller, more remote islands of the group like Symi, Leros and Kastellorizo.

Because they're so close together these islands are perfect for hopping, so it may be the best places to stay in the Dodecanese for you are a combination of the islands!

Rhodes

Largest island in the group, Rhodes is one of the best places to stay in the Dodecanese if you're looking for a gateway to the other islands. The ferry hub is in Mandraki Harbour, which is quite close to the treasures of Rhodes Old Town. Heritage listed because of its fascinating mix of architecture, Rhodes Old Town is a must for people with an interest in history and mythology.

Kos: for Crystal Clear Beaches

Most of the package holiday hotels are on the southern side of the island, which also has some of the nicest beaches. But Kos is also a good choice if you're looking for a particularly Greek experience: the island is less developed. This is a good spot if you dream of finding your own secluded cove. Kos also has several very interesting ancient sites.

Patmos: The Island Choice for Spiritual Travellers

Patmos is where St. John experienced the visions which inspired the Bible's Revelations. So it's the place to go for travellers looking to rejuvenate their souls as well as their bodies. Patmos is also the greenest of the island group, so one of the best places to stay in the Dodecanese for hikers.

The mountain top village of Chora is definitely one of the highlights of the Dodecanese. It's by St. John's cave, a monastery in his name, and there are loads of walks in the area, many offering spectacular views.

Smaller Islands

Dodecanese' suggests there are twelve islands, but there are more if you include the tiny ones. Some of the smaller islands offer some of the best places to stay in the Dodecanese for really 'getting away from it all'.

Leros is probably the perfect destination if you want to relax. Time on this island passes slowly and calmly. There are bits and bobs to see but nothing monumental. The pleasure here is in the strolling lanes between pastel buildings. And soaking up the awesome sunsets!

Symi doesn't boast the most beautiful beaches, but it has the gorgeous clear waters, stunning varied coastline and one of Greece's most spectacular harbours.

Kastellorizo is so far to the south of Rhodes that it's left off many maps of the Dodecanese. Which is great if your idea of one of the best places to stay in the Dodecanese is remote and traditional.

Rhodes

  • Small, cheap and cheerful, the Apollo Guesthouse is close to the ferry port AND to all the major sights of Rhodes Old Town. So it's one of the best places to stay in the Dodecanese if you're staying for a while and you want to see as many islands as possible.
  • The Rodos Park Suites is ideal for families. Comfortable and modern, this hotel has a full size pool as well as being close to the beach.
  • The Hotel Nikos Takis is the one to book if you appreciate unique accommodation. The decor is reminiscent of a harem. But its luxury goes much further. To jacuzzis in each suite, to private yacht and helicopter charter and the use of a guitar or accordion to serenade your lover. This is definitely one of the best places to stay in the Dodecanese for honeymooners too.

Kos

  • Aqua Blu Hotel and Spa is an idyllic seafront property just 15 minutes walk from the centre of Kos Town. Here you'll find adult luxury (no children allowed), gourmet restaurants and top notch spa.

    Patmos

    • Our particular favourite on Patmos is the 9 Muses, which as well as offering superb accommodation is very reasonably priced.

    Symi

    • The Old Markets Hotel is located in the heart of Old Symi. It offers stylish rooms, gourmet food and is within easy reach of both beaches and sights.

      Leros

        • Archontiko Angelou is a pink and white villa built in 1895. It offers six rooms and is very close to one of the island's best beaches. Plus it's excellent value for money.

        Kastellorizo

        • Mediterraneo is the perfect boutique hotel to stay in to appreciate this remote island. There's no pool, but it's still one of the best places to stay in the Dodecanese 'cause instead it has a ladder in its courtyard that leads directly into the peacock blue of the harbour!
