About Nijmegen

Set on the banks of the Waal River in the eastern Netherlands, Nijmegen prides itself on being the oldest city in the country. Boasting over 2,000 years of history, this fascinating Gelderland destination fuses ancient Roman roots with classic Dutch charm. Ideal for heritage aficionados and relaxed explorers, the best places to stay in Nijmegen are clustered close to the city centre; ideally located for soaking up the magic of this corner of the country.

Amble around the vibrant heart of town to admire well-preserved medieval and Renaissance-era buildings on cobbled streets, some of which now house hotels, boutiques and cafés. Step into the striking Stevenskerk, or marvel at the red-brick De Waagh before picking a perch for a coffee on the gorgeous Grote Markt. Keen shoppers will adore perusing the Hezelstraat, whilst museum-goers can delve into the past at the Museum Het Valkhof, the Stratemakerstoren Museum and the unusual MuZIEum.

Nature lovers and families will also find an abundance of green spaces in Nijmegen. The Kronenburgerpark, complete with tranquil ponds and castle ruins, is a favourite, as is verdant Valkhof Park. Boat trips on the Waal River come highly recommended, as does the 46km Nijmegen Cycle Route, which begins in the city centre and curves close to the Millingerwaard Nature Reserve.
