Über Vidago

A small town close to Vila Real in Northern Portugal, Vidago has long been famed for its soothing mineral waters. Set close to the Spanish border, the town is a brilliant base for outdoorsy types eager to explore the surrounding wine country. Accommodation options are wide-ranging, with simple B&Bs as well as imposing heritage hotels — one of which is our pick of the best places to stay in Vidago.

Visited by King Luis in 1875 and 1877, Vidago became a popular 19th-century resort destination amongst well-heeled holidaymakers from Porto — particularly with the introduction of a railway in 1907. Modern-day visitors are invited to enjoy rejuvenating hydrotherapy treatments in beautifully appointed spas, to play a round or two at Vidago Palace Golf, or to admire heritage landmarks including the nearby Roman-era Ponte Romana de Trajano. Modern art aficionados will be particularly taken with the impressive Nadir Afonso Arts Centre in Chaves.

The Porto region’s countryside is characterised by rolling vineyards, perfect for long rambles or cycling excursions in the sunshine. Put your feet up at the best place to stay in Vidago, a Belle Époque palace hidden within landscaped parkland and promising spectacular views.
