About Ajaccio

The tiny capital of Corsica, Ajaccio is a buzzy historic port town on the island’s western side. Famously the birthplace of Napoleon, it’s a fascinating seaside destination and a wonderful starting point for discovering this iconic Mediterranean island. Well-connected to mainland France by air and sea, Ajaccio is also a popular cruise ship stop. Accommodation options range from simple B&Bs to chic boutique hotels; the best places to stay in Ajaccio would fit right in on the sophisticated French Riviera.

Starting from the Place de Gaulle, stroll through the old town on foot to admire heritage buildings aplenty, and to delve into the town’s past. The lively Cours Napoléon, parallel to the beach, boasts cafés, shops and chic eateries galore, whilst the seafront promenade is particularly busy with amblers during the hot summer months. Reminders of the town’s most recognisable son are everywhere; don’t miss visiting the Maison Bonaparte. The Musée Fesch, Musée Capitellu and the Citadel are also intriguing.

Clamber up the Sentier des Douaniers for panoramic sea views, admire the boats bobbing in the port, and stock up on fresh local produce at the daily morning market in Place César-Campinchi. Return to one of the best places to stay in Ajaccio after boat trips, laid-back beach days and delicious seafood suppers.
