The Best Hotels in Bucharest’s Old Town

BucharestImage by Hans Hansen from Pixa

Locally it’s called Centro Vechi, which translates to Old Centre, but people will know what you mean if you ask them about the best hotels in Bucharest’s Old Town. They’ll know you mean the part of town between the Dambovita river, Calea Victoriei, Regina Elisabeta and the Bulevardul Brătianu, which is basically the bit which wasn’t bombed out during World War II or destroyed or dismantled by communism afterwards.

Today the Old Town has become the sort of thing you’ll find in other old centres. It is picturesque and has some of Bucharest’s best restaurants and bars, and some charming boutiques and galleries etc., but surprisingly little in the way of big name historic sights. Much the architecture is old, yes, and some of it is actually a bit unsafe - watch out for the red discs which highlight this - but there’s no castle or cathedral (though there are several very impressive churches), just plenty of atmosphere and the history of real people who have lived through some pretty dramatic times.
