About Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a big hitter as far as Tuscan wine goes, but it’s also a big hitter on traditional Tuscan hilltop charm. And our Gurus’ list of the best places to stay in Montepulciano is a big hitter on perfect bases for soaking up the local charms and culture, and indulging in Montepulciano’s delicious food and wine. Accommodation options in Montepulciano include elegant restaurants with rooms, luxuriously converted villas, small B&Bs, and romantically secluded farmhouse escapes.

Montepulciano is Southern Tuscany's highest hilltop town, so you can expect wonderful views across the surrounding vineyards and beautiful rolling countryside. In the town itself it's worth strolling the length of the steep main street simply to take in the fabulous Renaissance architecture and when you reach the Piazza Grande find a pew and admire some more!

As with so many of Tuscany’s charming hilltop towns, there’s a limit to how much accommodation can fit within the fortified walls, so you’ll find some of the best places to stay in Montepulciano outside the walls, in idyllically converted villas and farmhouses, with rustic details and phenomenal views. Although we have some wonderful picks within the ancient city walls, plenty of the best places to stay in Montepulciano are jut outside, under ten minutes' drive from town, or under an hour's stroll.

The Best Places to Stay in Montepulciano

For Historic Montepulciano

  • The Locanda di San Francesco is a small hotel and restaurant is a central spot, close to the top of the hill. As well as the views being incredible this means you’re also close to bars, cafes and restaurants, though the hotel has its own excellent gourmet Tuscan restaurant. The Lorcanda di San Francesco has just four rooms, plus a library, a bar, gardens, and that fantastic restaurant.

For a luxury resort

  • Precise Tale Poggio alla Salla is a beautiful neo-classical villa and outbuildings turned luxury resort, about 20 minutes from Montepulciano. Set amongst Tuscan vineyards, it offers beautiful rooms and suites and a plethora of facilities including kids club, spa, three pools and Italian restaurant.

For a Rural Retreat

  • The Fattoria San Martino is a simple, rustic, and stylishly renovated 18th century villa just outside Montepulciano, with seriously eco-friendly practices. Traditional, and local, limewash and stone were used in the villa’s renovation, with beeswax for polish, and lemon and vinegar for numerous cleaning jobs. There are just four rooms and apartments, some with a kitchenette. The decor is elegant and eclectic, with fantastic original features and wonderful views of the Tuscan countryside. Plus there's a vegetarian/vegan restaurant which also runs cooking classes.

For an Intimate Escape

  • The Villa Poggiano is a gloriously ornate villa, set on set hectares of parkland overlooking medieval Montepulciano. It has 14 guest rooms and suites, featuring terracotta floors, exposed beamed ceilings, large windows and original details, like decoratively painted ceilings and walls, marble floors, grand fireplaces and tapestries. The hotel offers cooking classes and wine tastings. You can also take art classes. The pool continues the theme too, complete with statues and stone urns.
  • Podere Dionara is an elegant stone farmhouse turned six room B&B with a stunning infinity pool. Surrounded by its own fields and farmland, and boasting incredible views, this is a wonderful place to escape to, yet it's still just a couple of kilometres outside Montepulciano. The decor has a rustic feel — think terracotta tiles, wrought iron, exposed beams and whitewashed walls.

For Couples

  • Follonico is a traditionally beautiful, and wonderfully relaxed B&B about five kilometres north of Montepulciano (about ten minutes drive), on the way towards Siena. There are just two rooms and four spacious suites, beautifully and simply decorated to make the most of the original features, but making sure to include all the modern comforts. The infinity pool is gorgeous, with incredible views, there’s an honesty bar with a collection of fantastic local wines, and when it’s warmer they offer their breakfast feast outside. A hideaway where time feels as if it might just stand still.

For an apartment or villa

Travel Information

  • Florence Airport, Amerigo Vespucci, is 127 kms, or 79 miles from Montepulciano, about an hour and twenty minutes in the car. Pisa Airport may be useful to visitors too, about two hours drive away.
  • If you plan to hire a car, which we would advise if you want to get out and explore further afield, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • The weather is at its best in the summer months, with the average daily temperature climbing to 30°C in July and August. However, this is peak tourist season and so if you want to avoid the crowds (and pay less for accommodation) then maybe April, June or September might be better. The weather's still in the low 20°Cs, perfect for sightseeing.
