About Tinos

Famously the home of the Church of Panagia Evangelistria — the Greek Orthodox equivalent of Lourdes — peaceful Tinos also boasts some of the most graceful architecture in the Cyclades. A wonderful destination for cultural and heritage aficionados, it’s also a tranquil escape for beachgoers and ramblers. There is a small selection of great accommodation options; our pick of the best places to stay in Tinos is a particular boutique favourite.

Most visitors base themselves in the town of Tinos — also called ‘Hora’ — which doubles as the island’s main port. It is here that the neoclassical Church of Panagia Evangelistria, housing a sacred statue of the Virgin Mary, can be found. The church’s roots are fascinating, with archaeological excavations revealing that this spot was previously the site of temples to Poseidon and Dionysos, before that of a Byzantine church. There’s no shortage of history in the present-day church’s three museums, but the main draw is the icon of the Virgin Mary, draped in jewels and believed to have healing powers.

Venture beyond the town to discover the island’s quiet villages, dotted amongst its rolling, terraced hills and undulating coastline. A strong tradition of sculpting has existed since the Venetian era, and you’ll spot ornamental elements to the homes and buildings of whitewashed villages as you wander. Discover more about this art at the Museum of Marble Crafts, or simply soak it up on guided walking tours before tucking in to delicious Greek lunches and dinners. Kick back in Livada beach, or return to your pick of the best places to stay in Tinos to relax poolside, within sight of the sea.
