About Peschici

Peschici is picturesquely arranged along a rocky ridge overlooking a gentle scoop of sandy beach and a turquoise bay. The charming old town has something of Amalfi about it, with a tightly knitted collection of whitewashed houses arranged, labyrinthine, within the walls of the old town, and spilling out below them along the headland. It makes for a spectacular photograph in the evenings. Beyond the walls the contemporary town of Peschici spreads, with spacious resort-style hotels and all the mod cons you might need for a fabulous beach break. The best places to stay in Peschici can be found in both the old town, by the beach, and just on the other side of the bay, where you get views of Peschici’s old town, as well as the ocean.

Peschici is a great destination if you’re looking for sunshine, but are keen to do more than just enjoy the beach. Though the beach is very pleasant, especially for families, Peschici’s castle is probably the main attraction. It’s certainly an impressive physical presence, on a karst spur 100 metres up, overlooking the town and the bay beyond. It’s now used as a torture museum, with life-sized replicas of some of history’s more unpleasant practices. Not for the faint hearted! The rest of historic Peschici is much more charming, pretty squares lined with artisan shopping, cheerful little bars, cafes and restaurants. The coastline here is dotted with Saracen towers, used to ward off invaders, and now fantastic sights in the rugged, Mediterranean countryside. And most of the land around Peschici is now part of the Gargano National Park.

During summer Peschici is a lively spot. The lidos come to life in the evenings, with music, theme nights, open air cinema and live events, and the restaurants in the historic part of town bustle merrily too. In the cooler months this is a much quieter town, and some of the best places to stay in Peschici offer wonderful winter or autumn escapes.

The Best Places to Stay in Peschici

For the View

  • La Chiusa delle More is a magical looking stone-built hotel, that seems to sprawl down a hillside, towards the sea below, via a number of charming terraces, a restaurant, pool and olive groves. The ten rooms and suites are arranged in a collection of traditional stone farm buildings, offering an excellent range of accommodation options, and great choices for families too. The beach is just 500 metres away, and the hotel is almost as close to the edge of the Gargano National Park. We love the restaurant, with its Puglian cuisine, cooking classes, and fabulous local wine list.

Travel Information

  • The closest airport to Peschici is Bari Airport, which is about two and half hours away by car. Naples Airport, is on Italy’s opposite coastline, but it might be an easier journey for you; it’s about thee and half hours drive.
  • If you want to hire a car — which we strongly advise if you’re staying in Peschici and want to see more of Puglia — we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Peschici’s Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild winters means there’s not really a bad time to visit weather wise, though the seaside location means summer is the most popular time of year. If you’re not restricted about when you travel you may want to consider September and October, because the water is still warm, the sun still shining, and there are far fewer visitors around. Spring in Puglia is ideal if you want to explore the region’s inland charms too.
