About Arrowtown

A gold rush village perched on the banks of the picturesque Arrow River, the charming settlement of Arrowtown is a lovely base for a more relaxing South Island stay. Just 20 minutes from the excitement of Queenstown and the Coronet Peak Ski Field, this buzzy little community has stacks to offer to both active and more laid-back couples, friends and families. Accommodation options range from modern B&Bs to expansive luxury resorts, with the best places to stay in Arrowtown promising stunning views of The Remarkables and easy access to a whole host of outdoorsy activities.

Amble down Buckingham Street to soak up Arrowtown’s rich heritage. To delve into the region’s gold mining history, look to the Lakes District Museum, the former Bank of NZ building, or to the Arrowtown Art Gallery. Further afield, the Chinese Village offers an experience of life in the mid- to late-1800s, whilst private tours of Skippers Canyon detail the impact of gold mining. Back in town, catch a performance at the School of Russian Ballet or see an arthouse film at Dorothy Brown’s Cinema. Don’t miss having your photo taken in Victorian costume and panning for gold in the Arrow River with the kids.

Winter travellers can ski and snowboard at Coronet Peak, Cardrona and Treble Cone, whilst those visiting during the milder months will enjoy horse riding, mountain biking and hiking along myriad forested trails. Kayaking on Lake Hayes is superb, as is fishing on the many nearby rivers. Keen golfers can play a round or two at Millbrook Resort’s two courses, which also host the New Zealand Open. The resort is one of the best places to stay in Arrowtown as an active family or group!
