About Tasmania

Beautiful Tasmania sits slightly south of mainland Australia. A rugged island of rocky, snow-capped mountains, vast forests and wild plains fringed by beaches of golden sands, this is a dazzling destination for outdoorsy travellers. Australia’s only island state, Tasmania feels distinctly different from the mainland, with its heritage towns, unspoilt landscapes and charming, laid-back vibe. This is reflected in many of the best places to stay in Tasmania — intimate, often owner-run escapes in spectacular surroundings.

Some of our Tasmania Collections:

Begin your explorations in coastal Hobart, strolling through the lovely, leafy town centre with its historic townhouses, artsy museums and burgeoning crop of top-notch eateries and bars. A small, friendly city, this is a great base for sailing excursions, cycling, sight-seeing and stocking up on seasonal produce at bustling markets. Hop across to Bruny Island for superb wildlife encounters, or retreat to the farmhouses and homesteads of the countryside for delicious cuisine and a real sense of tranquility. Foodies and wine aficionados will adore the Tamar Valley in particular; Launceston is a brilliant springboard for tours and tastings.

Tasmania’s isolated setting has preserved some of the rarest plants and animals in the region. Admire the pristine green-greys of the Huon Valley, clamber up the craggy peaks of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, or kayak and sail along the island’s lakes and rivers. Some of the best places to stay in Tasmania are coastal escapes, ideal for sun-drenched days spent swimming, surfing and soaking up the splendour of this very special destination.

The Best Places to Stay in Tasmania

FOR BOUTIQUE CHIC

  • The Islington Hotel, a converted Regency townhouse in hilly South Hobart, fuses timeless elegance with chic modern design. The stone and glass extension frames beautiful views of Mount Wellington, there's a gorogeous gourmet restaurant, and an impressive collection of art and antiques from the owners' 30 years of global travels adorns the hotel. Very romantic.
  • Ship Inn Stanley, housed in a charming yellow-painted inn dating back to the 1800s, is a gorgeous Tasmanian bolthole. Nine indulgent suites ooze elegance, with antique furnishings, original artwork and curios set against warm, moody painted walls and polished wood. Kick back in the shared guest lounge or admire picturesque views of Sawyer Bay from the deck. A real gem.
  • The Red Feather Inn is a collection of beautiful colonial-era buildings, offering rooms, suites and superb private cottages in the Meander Valley. A short drive from Launceston, this is a great base for couples, friends and families, with gorgeous gardens and easy access to hiking and cycling trails. The farm-to-table cuisine is top-notch.

For Foodies

  • Stillwater Seven in lovely Launceston is the stuff of legend. Chef Craig Will's seven-course tasting menus will delight foodies, who have been flocking to the award-winning Stillwater Restaurant since its opening. Linger a little longer with a few nights at one of the seven suites housed in an 1830s riverside flour mill. Elegant, design-led spaces are a fabulous fusion of old and new, and feel wonderfully romantic.

FOR a City Break

  • Henry Jones Art Hotel prides itself on being Australia's first 'art hotel'. A hip, stylish space housed in a series of 1820s warehouse conversions and a former jam factory on Hobart's waterfront, the hotel has characterful rooms with wooden beams, exposed stone, metal roofs and superb harbour views. The speakeasy bar is very cool, and art by Tasmanian artists is showcased in rooms & shared areas.
  • The Tasman is a luxurious Hobart hotel with striking waterfront views from three connected buildings, the oldest of which dates back to 1847. Swish suites are beautifully appointed, with mood lighting, striped red and white carpets, and big beds topped with crisp white linens. Two restaurants, a speakeasy-style bar, gym and balconies complete the picture.
  • MACq 01 is a sleek contemporary hotel on the Hobart waterfront, with glittering metal roof, wooden siding and floor-to-ceiling windows from stylish modern guest rooms. Big photos act as headboards, and minimalist rooms feature designer furnishings as well as indulgent bathrooms & terraces. The storytelling theme is appealingly unique, with fascinating organised tours of the hotel and the city beyond.
  • Moss Hotel, tucked in a pair of 19th-century sandstone warehouses near Hobart's waterfront, has exposed brick or stone walls, glittering moss-coloured Italian tiles and a real sense of timeless glamour in its 41 guest rooms. An elegant urban offering, perfect for romantics.

FOR A COUNTRY HOUSE

  • Woodbridge on the Derwent, 25 minutes from Hobart in the Derwent Valley, invites guests to unwind in eight luxurious suites — many of which boast idyllic river views. Expect crackling fireplaces, a cosy library, great wine cellar and extensive gardens surrounding the 1825-built mansion. With kayaks, paddle boards, bicycles, a hot tub and sauna, this is a top rural hideaway in wine country.
  • Quamby Estate, set within 150 acres of landscaped grounds with tennis courts and a nine-hole golf course, is a marvellous rural retreat just 20 minutes from Launceston. Unwind in laid-back boutique bliss, savour seasonal cuisine or host a gorgeous wedding. A historic homestead dating back to the 1820s, with plenty of charm.
  • Villa Howden, on the tranquil shores of North West Bay, promises 10 elegant guest rooms and suites with waterfront views and floral textiles in a lovely country house. Stroll through leafy gardens, tuck into terrific Tasmanian cuisine, and enjoy sailing or hiking excursions. Romantic and relaxing.
  • The Corinda Collection has the feel of a country escape, yet sits just 15 minutes from central Hobart. The house is still in the hands of the family of 19th-century timber merchant Alfred Crisp, the original owner. Lavish traditional rooms, suites and cottages have big bay windows framed by patterned curtains, with cosy beds and antique pieces. Perch on the pretty terrace or take a guided tour of the gardens.

For a Glamping Retreat

  • Truffle Lodge sits on the banks of the Derwent River. Five luxurious tents await, featuring private decks, double beds, patterned rugs and ensuite bathrooms with big wooden tubs. Savour breakfasts, three-course dinners and games by the fire in the main lodge. Book the whole place for a memorable celebration with friends.
  • Bay of Fires Bush Retreat, close to gorgeous Binalong Bay, has cosy bell tents and a trendy bunk house as well as rooms with shared bathrooms. The big shared kitchen has a pared back industrial vibe, and guests are encouraged to gather to share food or tales by the fire after days of surfing and exploring. Don't miss the chance to pre-order the delicious signature breakfasts!

For Sea Views

  • Avalon Coastal Retreat, on Tasmania's striking east coast, offers three spacious bedrooms overlooking a beautiful private beach. Kick back on the beach, hike along the clifftops or fill your bags with seasonal produce from Swansea's farmers' market to cook delicious dinners in the villa's modern, open-plan kitchen. Sensational sea views take centre stage at this luxury private villa.
  • Piermont Retreat is made up of charming cottages set around an 1838-built farmhouse overlooking two stunning private beaches. A remote east-coast escape, this family-friendly spot has cosy spaces in earthy tones, with log fires, spa baths and full kitchens. There's superb seasonal fare at the restaurant, and activities include kayaking, surfing, swimming & hiking. Very special.

Brilliant for romantic couples and outdoorsy adventurers, this luxury lodge promises guided nature walks, bird watching, Tasmanian devil encounters, and more. The serene spa is ideal for unwinding after big days out.

For a Wilderness Lodge

  • Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge offers four different types on accommodation, from suites to detached family cabins, surrounded by the wilderness of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park. Romantics will adore the Waldheim Alpine Spa, whilst outdoorsy types can see wallabies, wombats, possums and endemic birds whilst trekking and biking. The wine tastings are wonderful, too.
  • Thousand Lakes Lodge is an adult-only escape with nine contemporary guest rooms. Brilliant for those dreaming of discovering the 'real' Tasmania, this lodge offers hiking, fishing, e-biking, mountain biking, wildlife-spotting and more. An off-grid, eco-focused property on the banks of Lake Augusta.

For Design-Led Luxury

  • Kittawa Lodge is one of Australia's most exceptional escapes. Set on 96 acres of windswept coastal dunes on remote King Island, the lodge offers two minimalist one-bedroom hideaways featuring designer furnishings, sea-facing soaking tubs and artwork by local artists. Expect friendly hosts, feasts of seasonal produce and off-the-beaten-track adventures. Totally off-grid, absolutely sensational and very romantic.
  • Mona Pavilions offers ultra-modern pavilions on the Morilla Estate, in the grounds of the acclaimed MONA Museum. On the Derwent River just north of Hobart, this slick rural spot promises bold, design-led interiors with crisp, clean lines and pops of orange and purple against black-and-white interiors. There's a gym, sauna, heated pool, as well as vineyard tours, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and sensational art aplenty.
  • Rocky Hills Retreat is hidden within 250 acres of native bushland, perfect for a couples' escape. A striking, architecturally designed one-bedroom lodge, this space offers minimalist contemporary interiors, stunning views from floor-to-ceiling windows, and plenty of privacy. Cook up a storm in the charcoal kitchen, cosy up by the wood-burning stove and soak up forest panoramas.

Travel Information

  • Fly to Hobart Airport or Launceston Airport from a larger hub, such as Melbourne or Sydney. Alternatively, arrive to Tasmania by ferry from Port Melbourne or Davenport. Hop on a bus or take a taxi to your hotel from there. Many hotels will also be happy to arrange an airport or port pick up in advance.
  • Hobart is well-connected by public transport, but you'll want the independence of your own ride to explore Tasmania more freely. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • Visit in the summer months — between December and February — for pleasant temperatures and plenty of sunshine. This is peak season; you may find the spring and autumn shoulder season quieter, and hotels often offer reduced rates in those months.
