Hotel Review

The grand arched entrance of this otherwise austere-looking building dates from its time in the 17th century as the city's mint. In other respects, though, it has been totally transformed: bold and dark interiors - midnight-blue carpets, striped blue wallpaper – are jazzed up with startling flashes of turquoise furniture, colourful modern art and glowing black chandeliers.

Bedrooms are more sober with a sleek grey and white palette, and minimalist modular furniture that, together, create airy and restful spaces. A charcoal-coloured feature wall and big designer floor lamp add touches of drama. (Suites are also more dramatic with flashes of bright pink and fresco-style wallpaper.) Bathrooms are bright, modern and shower-only. Some rooms overlook the internal courtyard - the latter a nice spot for a summer breakfast -while the best rooms are at the rear overlooking the harbour entrance and the Lantern tower. The latter, one of three medieval towers that are the impressive remains of the city's port fortifications, is a two-minute walk.

The old port and the intriguing arcaded streets of the oldtown - plus plenty of restaurants - are within ten minutes yet the hotel's street is outside the city's bustle.

After a day exploring, relax in the cool subterranean surrounds of the hotel's spa with its sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, and luxurious Sochys products. There's a small bar and simple charcuterie and cheese platters, but the hotel really shines at breakfast, a wonderful spread of breads, pastries, cakes and waffles as well as fruit, eggs and cold meats. Just the ticket for a day's exploring.
