About Ile d'Oleron

Oléron Island is just off France’s Atlantic Coast, just to the west of Rochefort on the Bay of Biscay, in the Poitou-Charentes region. It’s the second largest of France’s islands, after Corsica, and is a mild and fertile spot with about the ‘right’ amount of rainfall, so it’s really very pretty and very popular with French holidaymakers. The best places to stay on the Île d'Oléron tend to be around the best beaches, but there are a number of towns on the island so there’s plenty of choice.

There’s also something to be said for some of the island’s campsites, they don’t feature in our Guru’s list of the best places to stay on the Île d'Oléron, but that’s because we value our creature comforts too much!

You cross to the Île d'Oléron on a bridge almost three kilometres long, and you’ll find your car or bike useful once you get to the island. In fact if you’re looking for a lovely place for a cycling holiday the Île d'Oléron might be for you.

The island is also ideal if you like long beaches, which are ideal for surfers and horse riders, or if you like poking around old buildings, port towns and villages. It’s also a great spot for seafood-lovers. Guests staying on the Île d'Oléron enjoy many of the charms of the more fashionable Île de Ré, but with a lot less froufrou.

Don't forget to book well ahead if you plan to visit during the peak summer months. The best places to stay in the Ile d'Oleron are very popular!
