 Copenhagen Hotels
Denmark's capital, Copenhagen is a great place for an easy-going break but its hotels have not, until recently attempted to match the charm and freshness of Denmark's capital city. There are few 'character' hotels; most of those that stand out are contemporary and stylish, though you may find, as we did, that some of them display too much style over substance. Two restaurants to try: Amalie, in Amaliegade and Cofoco in Abel Catherinesgade. After exploring the city a great day trip can be made to the Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst, stunningly set by the sea, and on to Helsingor, site of Hamlet's castle. The hotels are listed by price category, and their order bears no reflection on our preference.

| Luxury: Early 20th-century Moorish-inspired building becomes a sleek new design hotel |
| Location: In the Tivoli Gardens, next to Town Hall Square |
| With all the fun of the Tivoli amusement park on its doorstep, this new design hotel in a restored Moorish-style palace has 13 suites, all different but each an enthusiastic combination of antiques, warm wood floors and bold modern pieces. No expense has been spared, from Geismars bedlinen to Bang and Olufsen flatscreens. Public rooms are decorated with a similar mix of the traditional and the contemporary, and not surprisingly, since it’s partly owned by food producers, there’s an impressive range of gastronomic choices. |

| Luxury: Large contemporary design hotel in a one-time department store |
| Location: Central, in the Latin Quarter |
| A much loved budget department store has been transformed into this uber trendy 268 room hotel with a huge white atrium, trendy cocktail Bar Rouge (noisy at weekends), Cafe Blanc and restaurant Bleu, their names echoing the splashes of colour that cheer the eye in both rooms and public spaces. Great rooftop views from the upper floors, fabulously comfortable beds; Scandinavian buffet breakfast. |

| Mid Price: Stylish, luxurious hotel with five different types of room |
| Location: Central, close to Queens Palace and Nyhavn |
| A fine location in Copenhagen's most elegant and regal district is matched by this new hotel's beautifully designed lobby/dining area with cerise pink armchairs and a long, langorous bar. Rooms are in five categories and colours. In the same stable as the long-established grande dame Hotel Angleterre, the Front makes a smart, luxurious place to stay. |

| Mid Price: Balinese decor, organic restaurant, modern technology |
| Location: Vesterbro, close to the central station and Tivoli Gardens |
| Latest addition to the growing brigade of laid back Guldsmeden hotels (as well as Bertrams there is the Carlton, also in Vesterbrogade) the Axel includes a spa and penthouse suites with private terraces amongst its 129 room, decorated in Guldsmeden's signature Balinese style, with teak four posters and Persian rugs, plus modern technology. And another of its excellent restaurant/cafes, with delicious organic food served on Mexican pottery. |

| Mid Price: Fresh decoration and garden views just outside the centre |
| Location: Vesterbrogade, 20 min walk to centre |
| Further from the city centre yet still within reach by foot or bus (outside the door) this is the intimate younger sister of the Guldsmeden Carlton, featuring similarly fresh, attractive bedrooms, many with balconies overlooking the garden, and the same organic breakfast in a delightful open plan kitchen/café where a buffet dinner is also served, plus a shop selling culinary treats. |

| Mid Price: Elegantly restored old building on the coast outside Copenhagen |
| Location: Charlottenlund, 5 miles from city centre |
| A centuries old hotel romantically situated just five miles outside Copenhagen on the old coast and beautifully revamped to become a stylish, fun and relaxing base for visiting both city and Danish Riviera. Surrounded by charming thatched houses and wealthy residences, it's a stone's throw from the sea and beaches, with a welcoming atmosphere and popular French/Italian restaurant. |

| Inexpensive: International design and a personal touch in a relaxing, good value hotel |
| Location: Frederiksberg, near city centre |
| A 15 minute walk from the centre of town, with bus and metro connections close by, the newly refurbished Avenue, in residential Frederiksberg, represents excellent value for money, with clean, modern, well-equipped rooms including excellent beds, flat screen TVs, DVDs (in some rooms), minibar and free wireless internet. An excellent choice for families (some of the rooms sleep four) the staff are friendly and parking is available. |

| Inexpensive: Bargain prices at this unusual hotel, given a makeover by young artists |
| Location: Central, close to Latin Quarter and City Hall Square |
| What happens when a regular 64-room hotel is redecorated within a few days by 21 young international artists for the launch of a new car – the Volkswagen Fox (in 2005)? Their website tells – and shows – all. A hotel for the young and young at heart...the rooms are mainly small and the one you end up in may not be to your liking, but taking pot luck is half the fun, and it's not an expensive mistake. |
