What with the many chocolate shops, the charming canal boats, horse and carriage rides, and the frites museum, Bruges is a great choice for a short family escape, especially if you have kids who will tolerate a bit of history - in return for chocolate. Bruges is very walkable, and picturesque with it! and, as one of Europe’s best preserved pre-motorised cities, it’s quite a safe destination as far as traffic goes. The atmospheric cafe culture means there are plenty of opportunities to stop and top up flagging energy levels. Bruges has a wide range of accommodation, and there are plenty of family-friendly options to choose from, including B&Bs with family rooms or guesthouses you could rent the entirety of; boutique-style townhouse conversions with spacious living areas; and luxurious grande dame hotels with all the trimmings, and canal views. The Old Town is the easiest part of town to stay in if you’re planning to explore on foot, but if your family prefers a more peaceful setting consider South Bruges, and if they would prefer a bit more space try the leafy, residential Magdalena Quarter.
