About Côte d'Azur
Once the place for artists and the wealthy to 'winter', the Côte d'Azur is now de rigueur in summer as well, the main challenge is deciding which of the best places to stay in the Côte d'Azur to choose. Nice, Cannes, St-Tropez, Antibes, Cap Ferrat, Juan Les Pins, Menton, Fréjus and St Raphael are our Gurus' top spots on the Côte d'Azur, but there are plenty of smaller hamlets also worth considering if you want to escape to the Côte d'Azur's beauty rather than being and seeing here to be seen.
Technically the Côte d'Azur stretches from Théoule-sur-Mer in the west to Menton on the Italian border, spreading the good life through Cannes, Nice and Antibes on its bright-blue-watered way. This is the French Riviera at its glamorous and most beautiful best, with stretches of perfect golden sand, dramatic cliffs, pretty fishing hamlets and an interior of medieval villages and verdant wilderness.
Are you a capital kind of person? in which case you'll want to stay in Nice. Once Italian and always decadent and fashionable, Nice is full of life, art, nightlife and shopping opportunities.
If you're here for a touch of the Côte d'Azur's glamour then you can't go past St-Tropez. A byword for glamour and wealth on a slightly hedonistic scale, St-Tropez is also rich in culture and history.
Cannes is just as glamorous, and possibly even more famous - at least once a year. The city's main promenade, La Croisette, gleams gracefully under the clear skies of the Côte d'Azur, a row of beautiful boutiques and excellent restaurants running all way down to the exclusive feeling harbour, which isn't actually that exclusive.
For a slightly less glitzy and more artsy vibe, check out St Paul de Vence. its narrow alleys are crammed with galleries and Marc Chagall is buried in the cemetery.
Alternatively you could base yourself on one of the area's islands. The Ile des Porquerolles is part of the Iles d'Hyeres group and has a population of just 200. It has an authentic feel to it and is about as off-the-beaten-track as you can get in this neck of the woods.
What not to Miss
- As well as the obvious pleasure of this region it’s worth seeking out the perched villages of Eze and Gourdon, the perfumeries of Grasse and the glass blowers of Biot. And Vallauris has the potters.
- It’s also worth taking some time out from your sunbathing and boutique-window-shopping to watch the older generation play Pétanque in the shade, or have a go yourself.
- And you definitely need to be hitting the markets!
- As well as gorgeous resort towns, the Côte d'Azur is famous for its beach clubs. Club 55 in St-Tropez was probably the first, it opened in 1955, then there's La Voile Rouge, famous for scantily clad women and table top dancing. Z Plage in Cannes is a more affordable beach club at l'Hotel Martinez charging approximately £20 per person for a half day. Worth every penny for the people watching and the pool, although at the starriest beach clubs, nobody goes near the pool for fear of spoiling their hair or maquillage. Whilst Sly Stallone and Beyonce favour Nikki Beach Club.
The Hotel Guru has scoured the region and has managed to find a wide range of properties. Our selection of the best places to stay in the Cote d'Azur range from the cheap and cheerful to the truly super luxurious where you'll mix with the stars.
Don't spare the expense
- With just four exceptionally glamorous rooms, Cap Estel is an exquisite mansion on a cliff top peninsula overlooking a stunning bay you can enjoy from both the terraces and private balconies. There's also a private beach, spa, gorgeous infinity pool and gourmet restaurant. True luxury 'A-list'.
- Sumptuous and luxurious, the Hotel Residence de la Pinède is one of the few hotels in the South of France with access to a good beach. As well as its beach terraces and elegant suites, this hotel also has a restaurant with two Michelin stars.
- Château du Domaine St-Martin is a grand affair in the hills above the Côte d'Azur, with classically sumptuous rooms, beautiful suites, private villas, exceptional gardens and two Michelin stars.
- The Chateau De La Messardiere is too cool even for St-Tropez, instead it peers down from a hilltop overlooking the bay. This is a glitzy and secluded spot to relax in where you'll feel truly pampered.
For a beach break
- La Voile d'Or is known as a romantic place to stay, with well placed antiques, excellent food and spectacular views of the coastline - it also has a private beach.

- Les Rosées is a romantic, elegant, five room guest house which serves fantastic home-cooked food, but also has Michelin starred restaurants just a short walk away. Surrounded by lush gardens, this is a peaceful, sunny retreat., situated in the hills above Cannes.
- For more places to escape, have a look at all our Cote d'Azur hotels in the hills.
- High in the hills over looking the Côte d'Azur and into Monaco, the Hotel les Deux Freres is a wonderfully renovated 19th Century school house rich in old-world glamour and panoramic sea views.
- Le Yaca is a collection of charming old houses just 100metres from Port des Pêcheurs. One of the houses was home to Colette in the 1920s. Discreet, casually chic and beautifully decorated in cool creams and whites accented by a Moroccan fabric here, an Oriental lantern there, it's the antithesis of St-Tropez flash and a real oasis of calm, especially the pool and garden.
- Cannes' Le Cavendish's Belle Epoque façade and open bar in the evenings hark back to a more glamourous era of bright young stars and glamour. The small size, location just a few steps from La Croisette and private beach make this a popular spot, so book ahead.
- Epi Plage on Pampelonne Beach is a collection of ten wooden chalets, all surrounding a central pool. Great for families, you're also only a short drive to the action of St-Tropez.
- The Hôtel Le Hameau is a Provencal farm house conversion beside the road to St. Paul de Vence. With views over a green valley and a simple elegance to its rooms, this is a peaceful and comfortable spot.
- If you're visiting the Côte d'Azur for the sunshine and the beautiful coastline, then La Jabotte in Antibes, might be the understated charmer for you. An intimate nine room sanctuary around an orange scented courtyard, this is a family friendly hotel with plenty of rustic charm, and it won't break the bank.
For Something Different
- The Windsor in Nice is an eclectic and quirky place to stay with original decoration - some rooms are more original than others - and an exotic garden, You’re just back from the seaside, but within walking distance of all the highlights of Nice.
- La Maison du Frêne is a strikingly decorated house with four large, airy suites and a truly amazing private art collection, including works by Hockney, Gilbert and George and Arman. There’s a house party feel to it in a quieter spot.
For a Spa Break
- The Hostellerie la Farandole is a great find in an outstanding location in Sanary-sur-Mer. There are 27 modern, elegant rooms with lots of white and glass - so as not to distract from the stunning views, a hamman and spa and pool and cocktail bar.
- La Villa Mauresque is a unique and beautiful net-moorish villa in Sainte Raphael with wonderful views and 17 rooms, some with their own jacuzzis.
- The Chateau de Valmer is a chic, five-star seaside hotel with large rooms, designer decor, stunning views and all the facilities you can imagine. We’re taking tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, gym, library, bars, a superb restaurant and a private beach.
For great value
- The Hostellerie Berard et Spa in La Cadiere-d'Azur, is a charming hilltop hotel with sea views, a spa, suites with private balconies and a Michelin starred restaurant. And yes it's listed under 'great value' because the rooms start from just £83 per night.
- Villa Rivoli in Nice is a Belle Epoque gem, with small but pretty rooms and a private beach just a stone's throw away - easily one of the best places to stay in Côte d'Azur for those one budget, with rooms starting from just £59 per night.
- The Auberge de la Madone also benefits from hilltop views, but this time you're right on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the Med.. Surrounded by olive groves and orchards, it's not a surprise that this auberge has wonderful views from the restaurant terraces, and equally wonderful food. And all starting from around £90 per night.
- Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport is the closest airport to most of the Côte d'Azur, and it’s the third busiest in France! but some towns and hamlets are closer to Marseille-Provence Airport. Cannes and Nice are well connected by train to Paris, so it’s quick and easy to get to most towns and hamlets on the Côte d'Azur via rail - St-Tropez is an exception worth noting.
- If you want to hire a car - which we highly recommend if you’re staying on the Côte d'Azur and want to see more of Provence - we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
- If you’re here to rub shoulders with the beautiful people then summer is the time to come. During July the Cannes film festival drives prices up all along the coast, so August is better. But if you’re not too fussed about the rich and famous then May, June, September and October will be much quieter and still sunny and warm.
