About Newport

What are the best hotels in Newport?

Newport is a charming little seaside town on the Pembrokeshire coast, surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches, rolling countryside and the dramatic slopes of Carningli Mountain. It’s a quieter corner of Wales, but there’s loads to keep you busy, from coastal walks to excellent local restaurants. Llys Meddyg is our pick of the bunch, a lovely family-run restaurant with rooms in a characterful old stone cottage. The individually decorated bedrooms, focus on local produce and pretty summer garden make it a particularly appealing place to stay.

There’s plenty to enjoy in Newport without needing to plan too much. Newport Sands is the obvious starting point, with a long stretch of pale sand that’s lovely for a beach walk or a paddle when the weather plays ball. Walkers can join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path for gorgeous sea views, or head up Carningli Mountain for a more challenging hike. Back in town, you’ll find welcoming pubs, independent cafes and some surprisingly good restaurants. There’s a little local history to explore too, including a medieval pottery kiln on display in the memorial hall.

The Best Places to Stay in Newport

For Foodies

  • Llys Meddyg is an artistic, family-run restaurant with rooms. Converted from a welcoming, large stone cottage, the restaurant takes up the ground floor and there are nine rooms above. Locally produced art features in all the rooms, and in the restaurant, which is known for championing local produce. In the summer the restaurant spills out into a lovely garden. The restaurant runs hunting, gathering and foraging courses, as well as cooking classes. Walkers, as well as foodies, love this hotel, and it’s great for families too.

For Great Value

  • Pretty Cnapan Guesthouse is a converted home, with five cheerfully decorated bedrooms — including some twin rooms and family suites. Investment has been made where it matters: in comfortable beds, fine linens and pretty fabrics. The views are another feature, though not all of the rooms have equally charming views. They do all have an access to a beautifully cared for garden, and the cosy, fire-lit lounge. An affordable gem.

Travel Information

  • Cardiff Airport and Bristol Airport are the closest airports for Newport: Cardiff is around two hours away by car or taxi, or four hours by train; and Bristol Airport is just shy of three hours away by car, and about six hours away by rail.
  • If you would like the freedom of your own car we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Newport is a beach town, but it’s not a hot beach town. Even in the summer months the temperature hovers around 20°C. The coastal position keeps things mild, but the pay off is the humidity, and the regular rain and showers. The summer is drier, but there’s still enough rain to keep the landscape looking lush and Pembrokeshire green.
