About Dokkum

Nestled in the northern reaches of the Netherlands, Dokkum is one of Friesland's most fascinating historical gems. Founded in the 8th century, this charming fortified town is the smallest of the eleven Frisian cities, yet brims with cultural significance. Curious visitors will be captivated by its star-shaped canal system, beautifully preserved buildings, and the striking windmills which punctuate the city’s skyline. The best places to stay in Dokkum offer easy access to these historical treasures, with many boutique hotels housed in centuries-old buildings yet promising stacks of contemporary style.

Amble around town to admire impressive heritage edifices, step into the Admiraliteitshuis to better understand the region’s maritime past, and see demonstrations of traditional crafts including silversmithing at artists’ studios around town. Dokkum is famously the place where Saint Boniface was martyred in 754 CE, and a chapel and spring now commemorate the site, which is well worth visiting. Regular festivals also attract visitors from the region and beyond; sailing competitions and the unusual Frisian sport of canal pole vaulting are particular favourites.

The surrounding Frisian countryside is ideal for exploring on foot or two wheels. Cycle along the expansive network of paths which wind their way through verdant farmland, past grazing sheep, and alongside the tidal flats of the UNECO-listed Wadden Sea. Boat tours on Dokkum's canals and into the interconnected waterways are also wonderful for relaxed bird watching and soaking up the sunshine. Come evening, return to one of the best places to stay in Dokkum for a feast of Frisian specialities and some very warm hospitality.
