About Khao Lak

What are the best hotels in Khao Lak?

Khao Lak is a lovely stretch of Thailand's Andaman coast, where long sandy beaches sit beneath forested hills and little villages give the area a relaxed, local feel. It's a quieter alternative to Phuket, with excellent seafood, uncrowded beaches and some lovely places to stay, from barefoot beachfront resorts to tucked-away jungle retreats. For us, Casa de la Flora is the standout spot, with its private-pool villas overlooking Ban Niang Beach, excellent restaurant and indulgent spa.

White Sand Beach is one of the prettiest stretches of coastline, with clear water and plenty of room for a long walk, while Pak Weep Beach is another favourite, particularly for lunch at Mr Bao. Inland, Ton Chong Fa Waterfall is well worth the trip, with forest trails and natural pools for a refreshing swim. Khao Lak is also a popular base for boat trips and diving around the Similan Islands, while Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park offers jungle walks and lovely coastal viewpoints. For a fun evening out, the Moo Moo Cabaret is worth a visit.

For a Chic Boutique

  • A characterful boutique hotel with just 20 rooms, Hotel Gahn nods to its Peranakan heritage through dark wood, terrazzo floors and traditional details. Travel Information

  • Khao Lak’s closest international airport is Phuket International Airport, around 1–1.5 hours away by car or taxi. Transfers can also be arranged through local operators, although public transport options are more limited.

  • If you plan to hire a car, which is a good idea if you want to explore the beaches, waterfalls and national parks further afield, we recommend visiting our online partner Rentalcars.

  • November to April is the best time to visit, with plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures and calmer seas. May to October brings the monsoon, with heavier rainfall and rougher swimming conditions, although the landscape is particularly lush.
