Pretty, car-free Île d'Aix is a small Atlantic island popular for summery day trips and long seaside weekends. It is a small green crescent-shaped place, stretching to a length of around 2km, and with a permanent population of just over 200 residents. Complete with 5 sandy beaches, several forts designed by the famed engineer Vauban, a museum set in Napoleon's old house, the opportunity of exploring the island by horse-drawn carriage, not to mention a town comprised of whitewashed houses with colourful shutters, Ile d'Aix is the perfect place to go for a family holiday. Travel information

  • The island is mostly car-free (aside from firemen and dustbin men) but you can easily hire bikes and of course go on a horse-drawn carriage ride.
  • Fly to La Rochelle Airport, get a shuttle bus to the Pointe de la Fumée, from where you can get a 20 minute ferry ride to Ile d'Aix.
  • The best time to go is during the summer, when the temperature peaks at about 24 degrees celsius.
