About Rodez

Rodez is a town and commune and capital of the Aveyron department in south western France. It is home to around 25000 inhabitants and is a prosperous centre with a diverse culture; a mixture of old and new typified by the Musee Pierre Soulages (this ultra modern facility houses the life's work of its namesake, one of France's most eminent living artists. The Musee, opened in May 2014 by President Hollande, has brought the town back into the cultural limelight. The best places to stay in Rodez enable the visitor to sample a good variety of culture and interest.

Away from the dramatic line of sheet steel and giant boxes that make up the Soulage exhibition, one can visit the gothic masterpiece that is the Cathedral de Notre Dame which dominates the town. The views from its beautifully carved stone bell tower are spectacular.

Among many other sights include the collection of statues-menhirs (the largest in Europe) and the old Carthusian Monastery that now houses the Haras National (national stud).

Gastronomically there is much to take in. Rodez hosts three weekly farmers markers. Many restaurants serve local specialities, notably cheeses and red wine from nearby Marcillac.

Rodez is easy to get to with its own airport and excellent rail links to Paris and Toulouse.

The town is also notable for music venues and festivals. The best known festival is Shabazac in mid June, and Le Guinguelle and Le Studio frequently host concerts.

The best places to stay in Rodez are perfect bases for exploring both the city and the wider surrounding area.
