About Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer — Rajasthan's Golden City — possesses an undeniable magic. A former stopping point along a well-traversed trading route, the city has born witness to colourful characters and fascinating stories for centuries; its beautifully preserved centre will delight heritage and culture aficionados alike. Brilliant havelis and hotels abound, with our Gurus’ list of the best places to stay in Jaisalmer highlighting historic boutique boltholes as well as gorgeous desert escapes for couples, friends and families.

To pass through Jaisalmer’s ancient ramparts is to enter a world of winding alleyways navigated by people, animals, cycle rickshaws and street hawkers. At the city’s heart lies a labyrinthine fort of ninety-nine bastions, still inhabited and home to a conglomerate of temples, havelis, shops and dhabas. Founded in 1156 and today a World Heritage Site, this remains a living monument — and an unmissable sight for travellers. Guided tours of the fort come highly recommended, as do walks along the ancient city walls, and wanders through well-preserved houses-turned-museums such as the iconic Patwa-ki-Haveli.

Venture beyond the city itself to immerse yourself in the vast golden sands of the Thar Desert. This is still camel country, and excursions with these long-legged creatures are very special. Nights in the desert can be surprisingly cool, but gathering around a crackling fire to savour regional dishes under the stars is the stuff of dreams. Some of the best places to stay in Jaisalmer are desert camps, promising a luxurious take on an age-old experience.
