About Pushkar

Encircled by the Aravalli Hills, Pushkar's main thoroughfare runs along the northwestern fringes of the holy Pushkar Lake. Legend has it that the lake was created by the tears of Lord Shiva, shed after the death of his wife, Sati, and this remains a significant site of pilgrimage for devotees from Rajasthan and beyond. Many of the best places to stay in Pushkar are clustered around the lake — perfect for early morning strolls and beautiful waterside evenings.

Formerly a quiet town frequented only by wandering holy men and religious devotees, Pushkar has grown considerably in size and popularity over recent years, today seeing a steady flow of tourists — particularly backpackers — traversing its colourful streets. Just a couple of hours from bustling Jaipur, it’s a brilliant destination for those seeking a more laid-back Rajasthani experience. Amble around the lively market to admire textiles, jewellery and crafts, or enjoy guided yoga and meditation classes. Tour of the Brahma Temple, or hikes up to the hilltop Savitri Temple, both come highly recommended.

Beyond Pushkar’s limits lie the Thar Desert and the impressive Aravalli Range. Enjoy guided camel and horse riding safaris along the sand dune, day-long treks into the mountains, or stops at heritage sites including Ajmer Dargah — the tomb of the Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti. Sacred sites abound in this region, and it’s worth remembering that many restaurants consequently don’t serve meat, eggs or alcohol. Warm and welcoming, the best places in Pushkar fill up fast — particularly during the annual Camel Fair in November!
