About Santiago de Compostela

Galicia's historic capital, Santiago de Compostela is also one of the world’s great pilgrimage sites. The city’s soaring Cathedral of St James has been the final destination for pilgrims from across Europe for centuries, and it remains the city’s most famous landmark. Evidently a favourite amongst heritage aficionados, Santiago is also an excellent foodie hotspot, with delicious Galician flavours to savour at countless cafés, bars and eateries. Check out our list of the best places to stay in Santiago de Compostela as you starting planning your trip. We've discovered a range of hotels to recommend from an affordable B&B just steps from the cathedral to boutique hotels and rural hideaways.

Begin your explorations at the Romanesque Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, the alleged final resting place of the remains of St James. A splendid building dating back to the 11th century, the cathedral also has a fascinating museum. Surrounded by heritage buildings, this is a great starting point for a stroll around the walled medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and pedestrianised from dawn until dusk in the summer months. Tour the city’s other churches, admire the Monastery of San Martin Pinario, and kick back in the Alameda Park after delving into Galician history at the Museo de Pobo Galego, housed in a former monastery.

Tuck into delicious cuisine at the city’s relaxed family-owned eateries and trendy bars before returning to one of the best places to stay in Santiago de Compostela. You’ll certainly be in need of a rest if you’ve just completed the Camino!

The Best Places to Stay in Santiago de Compostela

For the Old Town

  • Hotel Miguel is a gorgeous little hotel on one of the most secluded squares in Santiago's pedestrianised Old Town. Pick this place for the appealing interior fusion of old and new, as well as the charming manicured garden and delightful regional restaurant. A chic boutique base.
  • Moure offers a cool, contemporary base on the edge of the Old Town. Perfect if you're looking for a dose of urban style, this bolthole has minimalist monochrome interiors with light wood and original exposed stone walls. Within walking distance of the cathedral.
  • Hotel Altair has just 11 atmospheric rooms, with exposed stone walls reflecting the building's history complemented by more modern furnishings. Another intimate Old Town spot for couples or friends.
