“With a grand location, and a grand history, this townhouse hotel in the heart of Alnwick offers sleek looks, generous-sized bedrooms and a hidden courtyard – and Northumberland’s glorious beaches are only 10 minutes away”

Hotel review

Opposite Alnwick Castle, this hotel has a pretty unbeatable location. The castle has been the Duke of Northumberland’s ancestral home for over 700 years and Bailiffgate, formerly the Georgian home of the then Duke’s land agent before becoming a school, returned to the Northumberland Estates to open as a hotel in 2025. You can more or less tumble out of bed, through the front door and be at the castle’s imposing gateway in one swift move.

Although there are bedrooms – and very grand ones – in the original Georgian buildings, most rooms and public areas are in the pale sandstone rear extension, clearly new-build but with a pleasing Georgian symmetry. The style throughout is of a modern townhouse – bold wallpapers, sleek furnishings, pale-wood and parquet floors – but with rich countryside colours of mossy greens, tawny browns, cherry reds and teal blues. Deep-hued headboards and armchairs add splashes of colour but, overall, they’re calming spaces, and all with generous bathrooms and delicious Jo Loves products (created by Jo Malone). Some suites spoil with a balcony or copper bath; castle-side rooms have the finest views.

The restaurant has a short menu of bistro classics – seared scallops, roast lamb with Puy lentils - though both cooking and service can be variable. Things improve at breakfast with interesting dishes such as Craster kipper hash. If it’s warm, ask for a table in the Courtyard Garden, a lovely sheltered spot which you’ll find hard to leave.
