In a restored 19th-century palace on the quieter Buda side of the Danube, the Kimpton BEM has flair. A golden stag presides over the glass atrium in blues and forest greens (folkloric motifs and mythological details run throughout the rooms following garden or sea themes).

Danube view rooms frame the Castle District, but courtyard-facing rooms with furnished balconies are equally appealing. Heated bathroom floors, rainforest showers, yoga mats and 65-inch Smart TVs come as standard. Daily Social Hour at Bar HUSO offers a complimentary drink and good company. Complimentary bikes are available for those wanting to cross the river to the livelier pulse of Pest - start with the ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter.

AGOS, ranked among Hungary's top restaurants, moves confidently between wild boar goulash and Mediterranean paella using seasonal local produce. Bar HUSO, with its regular DJ nights, and the feNNen Skybar are fixtures in the nightlife scene this side of the city, so do enjoy a sundowner over the city skyline. Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion are within easy walking distance. Very pleasant indeed.
