A place of pilgrimage for hundreds of years, the town was a key stopping point on the route to Santiago de Compostela in north-western Spain. Particularly popular with those interested in history, Rocamadour is a wonderful holiday destination and offers a good range of accommodation options. Our list of the best places to stay in Rocamadour highlights heritage B&Bs, converted châteaux and superb private villas.
Perched above a dramatic gorge on a tributary of the Dordogne River, Rocamadour is best-known for its shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary, housed in the Church of Notre Dame and believed to have been carved by Saint Amadour himself. The village has essentially grown around one narrow paved street, lined with medieval houses and passing through ancient gateways such as the Porte du Figuier. The 216-step ‘Grand Escalier’ leads to the 12th-century Church of Saint-Michel, the Church of St Sauveur, the Palais des Eveques and l’Hospitalet, which promise spectacular views. Other landmarks include the Maison des Abeilles and the Grotte Prehistorique des Merveilles, boasting striking prehistoric cave paintings.
Venture slightly further afield for hikes and horse riding, as well as boat trips through the Gouffre de Padirac cave system or family trips to the Forêt des Singes, where Barbary Macaques roam. The best places to stay in Rocamadour fill up fast, so book your trip well in advance.
