Hotel Portmeirion

The Llŷn Peninsula is the spectacular part of Caernarfonshire that juts out like an arm into the Irish Sea, from the edge of Snowdonia and North West Wales, to Bardsey Island. Its out-of-the-way-ness and classification as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty have made it a bastion of the Welsh language and culture, and it’s a wonderful coastline is a site of both marine conservation areas and a wonderful coastal path. It’s also got a bourgeoning surfing community, and fantastic birdwatching opportunities. And lots of people say it’s like Cornwall fifty years ago. Our recommendations for the best hotels on the Llŷn Peninsula include beach idylls, and bases for epic walks, hubs for learning about historic Wales, and a lot more beside.

For Families

Hotel Portmeirion

  • The Hotel Portmeirion and Castell Deudraeth is a rather eccentric hotel and resort, built in an incredible spot, with the aim being to prove that you could develop a naturally beautiful site without spoiling it. Its architect, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, arguably won his argument, because even though this 55 room hotel is quite big, and quite old now - it was built in 1926, it seems to work in this wooded, waterside spot, and it’s certainly still naturally spectacular. Portmeirion village is a charming spot, with a number of pubs, restaurants and boutiques, and the hotel and Castell both have brasseries too. The Castell also has a spa. If you bring your family you might opt for one of the private villas, but there are large family suites inside the original building too.

For The Ocean

Port Tocyn Hotel

  • The Porth Tocyn Hotel is also in a stunning spot, overlooking Cardigan Bay from near the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula. It has just 17 rooms and suites, but there’s still great facilities: a bar and restaurant, tennis courts, a games room and an outdoor pool. Perfect for surfers, birdwatchers or walkers.

For Great Value

Plas Tan-Yr Allt

  • Plas Tan-yr-Allt is a luxurious, country house hotel with picturesque views from its three bedrooms and restaurant and garden. You’re within striking distance of Snowdonia National Park, at the ‘top’ of the peninsula, and close to some beautiful beaches too. No kids or pets, but lots of peace, and beautiful antiques.
