At the edge of Alfama, Lisbon's oldest quarter, AlmaLusa feels more sophisticated B&B than hotel. This ancient neighbourhood, with a medieval layout that survived the 1755 earthquake, still hums with fishermen’s heritage and fado music. The trade-off for such storied surroundings? Rooms and shared spaces are (very) small.
Thoughtful touches and clever design ensure polish: homemade iced tea on arrival, Benamôr 1925 toiletries (the shop's nearby if you're smitten), daily-refreshed coffee pods and bottled water. See-through bathroom doors create the illusion of space in the rooms (a thick curtain preserves modesty). Crisp white bedding, evening turndown service, and friendly 24-hour staff make you feel looked after and cherished.
Delfina Café’s à la carte menu is among the area’s best: sautéed shrimps on garlic toast, fried cuttlefish with lime mayonnaise, and a knockout beef tenderloin ‘in the pan’ with cured ham, bay leaf, garlic, fried egg, and matchstick fries.
Breakfast is just as good; a small, high-quality buffet with pastel de nata, pastries, yoghurt and hams, with eggs to order. Bifold doors open onto the square, glorious in summer with views towards the glittering Tagus. Tables are close, inside and out - neighbours swiftly become friends.
Above all, the location is brilliant: cruise port and a train station moments away, main sights a short wander, and Lisbon's oldest stories on your doorstep.
