Hotel review

Still. Sun-soaked. Intentionally sparse. Under 20 minutes’ drive from Faro airport, six-bedroom quinta Âmago quietly offers the antidote to flashy resorts. Owners Alex and Liz keep things neutral and natural. Bougainvillaea frames the rustic poolside, hibiscus lines private entrances to each room. Handcrafted Portuguese furnishings fill minimal spaces and sun-dappled spots. Room Four features a kitchen and garden, Room Six offers blooming terrace views - all have rainfall showers, beautiful linens and mercifully, air conditioning.Continental breakfast is elevated with cooked eggs, fresh fruit and flat whites, ingredients all sourced locally. After that, there’s literally nothing to do but saunter from your sun lounger to the honesty bar for a bottle of pet nat and a bag of crisps. With no restaurant on-site, meal times become mini adventures - a thoughtful Google map and activity guide become your new best friends. Hire a car to make the most of the jutting landscapes and authentic restaurants a short drive away.

Nearby fishing village Olhão’s harbour launches frequent boating adventures to Parque Natural da Ria Formosa's islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol - some so remote that bikinis become optional. Pootle to Loulé for gentle afternoons filled with Moorish architecture and tosta mistas at Café Calcinha.

That said, Âmago’s charm lies in offering rare permission to forgo activities altogether. Monocle hardbacks line the breakfast area bookshelf, whispering of slow-living philosophies. If you're not sure how to switch off, simply take one off the shelf (and a port tonic from the fridge).
