“A traditional building, a central location, contemporary design and a very good ethos; this is an undeniably attractive stay. All profits go to a local charity, living up to its motto ‘Sleep good. Do good.’ There's also a hip bar and restaurant next door. Nothing's been missed here.”

Hotel review

The Good Hotel lives up to its name in all senses. The style is cool and modern, whilst remaining true to its Guatemalan roots. Everything has been well thought through – from filtered drinking water straight from the taps and an in-room guide on where to eat, drink and shop locally, to airy communal spaces with seating, excellent wifi and coffees. The Dutch aesthetic blends seamlessly with the Guatemalan culture. There are ‘worry dolls’ on the pillows, in-room teas, coffees and chocolates and locally-made products in the cool bathrooms.

Bedrooms centre around a courtyard garden with tropical plants and swinging chairs, set alongside a beautiful wooden colonnade. Behind each door, bedrooms are bright and airy and large comfy beds have crisp white linen with contrasting colourful Guatemalan fabrics. Opt for a Patio Room at the far side of the colonnade for high wooden ceilings, volcano views and outdoor shower. Each night that a guest spends at the hotel enables a child to go to school for a week, through the organisation ‘Niños de Guatemala’. Tasteful reminders of the good work carried out with the profits from the hotel are evident around the building, from colourful photographic portraits of children supported – such as nine-year-old Leonardo who loves computer science and basketball – to a timeline of the project and reminders of their motto ‘Sleep Good. Do Good’.

The location of The Good Hotel is very good, too. It’s ideally placed for exploring beautiful Antigua, with its coloured historical buildings and cobbled streets. Situated in a more residential area of Antigua, it’s surrounded by cool restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as boutique shops, yet a short walk from all the main sights. The adjacent restaurant and café with outdoor tables and food shop has a great selection of breakfasts, from the typical chapin, complete with eggs, refried beans and plantains, to pancakes, crepes and omelettes. Food and drinks are served throughout the day, suiting all tastes.

Good is in our name because it is in our nature. Good Hotels are a social business, that means we champion people by reinvesting our profits to help them realize their potential. Whether that's sending children to school who would otherwise not get an education, or giving opportunities to adults to retrain to work in hospitality. It's simple: the more people stay with us, the more we can give. And the more we can give, the more good we can do.

Antigua Guatemala City Guide

The 20 rooms here deviate from the usual Guatemalan template of vibrant colour in favour of Scandi-style minimalism and neutral tones. It may have an international feel but the Good Hotel fosters strong links to the community: all profits are donated to help disadvantaged children and only local labour is used (and paid fairly). This charitable approach mixes with the hotel’s modern comforts, such as rain showers, private patios, locally made toiletries – and great tapas at the bar.
