You get a whiff of cinematic history at Hotel Hydroussa too - Sophia Loren filmed Boy on a Dolphin here in the 1960s. This is a guesthouse rather than a boutique hotel (and is priced accordingly). Rooms are all en-suite and are unfussy without being spartan, and service is friendly, professional and informal. For those looking for a change from yoghurt, honey, cheese and olives, American-style breakfast (included in the price, and taken in the cool stone-flagged courtyard or a surprisingly gracious dining room) is generous. There's a shared lounge, and free WiFi on tap throughout the building. All in all, a very good deal on an island where such budget-friendly accommodation is rare.
