Set in the Dolomites in the village of Corvara Hotel Sassongher is family-owned and very eclectic with its very own helipad and private cinema, jukebox and children’s playroom, fireplaces and piano bar. The décor comprises antique armoires and chests, dolls and oriental rugs. The setting is pure Heidi country, steeped in tradition with Lederhosen waiters and chequered shirt waitresses in their ‘dindl’ blouses. Rooms are spacious and composed of traditional Tyrolean pine and come with all the mod cons as well as a balcony overlooking the village by day and stars at night.

There are three pine-panelled parlours called ‘Stuben’. The oldest is a 1520 cabin of a dining-room with stag heads on the walls. There is also the playful ‘Dolls Stube’ next door and the ‘Romantica Stube’: ideal for an intimate, candle-lit meal. What better, after being out in the elements all day, than a pampering visit to the comprehensive spa and jacuzzis for relaxation and the infrared sauna to boost the immune system. And then to sit out on the balcony with traditional red geraniums aplenty to accept the invitation from the monumental mountains and valleys to be explored the next day.
