Once a 19th-century shipbuilding yard throughout Hydra’s naval heyday, Mandraki Beach Hotel has been carefully reimagined to honour its maritime legacy. In the 1960s, the site became a hotel and famously hosted screen icons Sophia Loren and Frank Sinatra, drawn by the island’s cinematic charm and Mandraki’s golden sands. Today, it’s the only five-star resort on the island, and a tranquil escape where history, luxury, and natural beauty intertwine.
Guests arrive via a complimentary 7 - 10 minute boat ride from Hydra Town—offered regularly to and fro throughout the day until 11pm—and are welcomed by staff at the private jetty before being shown to one of 17 individually designed suites. Four occupy the tower, with the Tower Rooftop Retreat with its own hot tub and sea-facing loungers being the pièce de resistance, while remaining suites are tucked along the beach in the former shipyard buildings, all with private plunge pools.
Design nods to the property’s storied past with natural materials, original stone archways around the windows, whites, and sandy tones while interiors remain airy and modern. French brand Diptyque brings a luxurious amenity touch to the shower gels, shampoos and conditioners and an added touch is the provision of a small, traditional Greek honeycomb sea sponge in each bathroom. Although the resort is not ideal for wheelchair users due to its beachside arrival and layout, the beach-level rooms are more accessible for those with limited mobility.
The jewel in the crown? Captain M restaurant, also open to non-guests, which showcases unfussy yet delicious Greek cuisine, helmed by new chef Sofokleas Mastoridis. Highlights include the cauliflower couscous salad or sea bream—served simply with creamed potatoes and green beans, alongside a standout breakfast featuring Greek yoghurt with fruits and honey, flaky spinach pies, cheese pie on charcoal with feta, goat’s cheese, onions and bacon plus eggs of your choice.
Alternatively Lefterakis Taverna, 5 mins from the hotel tucked in a bay next to a whitewashed church, offers solid lunch and evening dining options with simple grilled fish, imam and other Greek staples.
If you tire of lounging by your suite’s plunge pool or strolling the beach, it’s roughly a 25-minute coastal walk with sweeping views across the Aegean to the Peloponnese mainlaind, to the DESTE Foundation ProjectSpace Slaughterhouse—an edgy seasonal exhibition space housed in Hydra’s former abattoir (Jeff Koons once turned it into a shrine to Apollo). Further is Hydra Town where you can indulge in a little more nightlife.
But honestly? With Mandraki striking the exact correct cord that ‘doing nothing is everything’, you may never want to leave.
