“A charming three-bedroom B&B in a former family home, with spacious rooms & verdant internal courtyards. Beautifully designed by celebrated architect C Anjalendran, this intimate bolthole promises superb service & fantastic breakfasts in laid-back Mount Lavinia. A rare find. ”

Hotel review

Cleverly designed by one of Sri Lanka's most acclaimed architects, Mount Lodge sits in laid-back Mount Lavinia, a seaside neighbourhood just south of central Colombo. A short walk from the beach, this three-bedroom B&B promises airy, light-filled spaces, with leafy courtyards, shaded terraces and cosy sitting rooms on each of its three floors.

Architect Anjalendran's thoughtful touches are evident throughout, with sliding doors and big windows framing verdant views, patterned tiles inlaid in polished concrete steps, and an abundance of light filtering in from well-chosen angles. Wooden four-posters draped with gauzy mosquito nets take centre stage in inviting bedrooms with vintage wardrobes and smooth concrete floors.

Two of the bedrooms are on the first floor, with a shared sitting room and mango tree-shaded terrace, whilst the suite encompasses the entire top floor of the house. Boasting its own white-clad sofas and rattan armchairs, plus a cobbled balcony with views towards the nearby church where hymns are sung each Sunday, this is a particularly good choice for quiet couples. Wherever you choose to stay, there's no shortage of spots to curl up with a cup of tea and a good book, or to plot out the next day's explorations before heading out to one of Mount Lavinia's beach bars for a sundowner.

The friendly team welcome guests warmly, and are on hand with helpful hints for discovering the best of Colombo. Visitors are asked about breakfast preferences the evening before, and invited to tuck into toast and eggs, or delicious Sri Lankan favourites including string hoppers with pol sambol, dhal and fragrant curries, or crispy egg hoppers. Fresh juice, sliced tropical fruit and Sri Lankan tea or coffee are perfect for kickstarting the day. There are some great beach restaurants within walking distance, but the team can also cook superb rice and curry suppers on request — and it's more than tempting to stay in to eat!
