California-meets-Manhattan zen, steps from Hudson Yards, NYC's innovative new neighbourhood (explore Edge NYC viewing platform and Vessel for spectacular city views). Soothing wood tones and good lighting welcome you; digs are surprisingly spacious for New York, with corner rooms enjoying cracking city views over Manhattan West Plaza.

Five dining spots include Zou Zou's for Eastern Mediterranean, Chez Zou for inventive cocktails, Bar Pendry evoking old New York grandeur, Garden Room for all-day Vittoria coffee, Vista Lounge for breakfast. Surprisingly no spa, but the fitness centre has Pelotons (request one in-room). Better still, you're steps from Peloton Studios where they film sessions with celebrity instructors.

The High Line, Moynihan Train Hall, and Madison Square Garden are close by. Passing through the latter, big-name artists stay in the Two Bedroom Pendry Suite with baby grand piano, record player, deep bath, and even an acoustic guitar - if only the walls could talk. Staff are experienced and warm (they know better than to share celeb sightings!), and cleanliness is impeccable. Pricey, but if any Manhattan hotel justifies it, this does.
