The central belt of Scotland is not awash with great places to stay, so it's a bonus when something new hits the scene. Thackray House recently opened in the centre of Callander (it was formerly the Roman Camp Hotel) after a recent change of ownership and branding.
It's a gorgeous property set on the banks of the River Teith, painted in traditional Scottish pink, which dates back to 1625 and was once a hunting lodge of the Duke of Perth. You can see the history as soon as you reach the thick wooden front door and you can feel it oozing from the pores of the building in the stunning drawing room and library. The rooms are rich with wood panelling, ornate carved ceilings, heavy drapes, roaring fires and plenty of sink-into sofas for either enjoying afternoon tea, a tipple before or after dinner, or simply whiling away a rainy day. The bar is smaller but follows a similar cosy theme.
The rooms are spread throughout the ground and upper floors. They are individually designed, but all are traditional with lots of period furnishings, and marble en suites. Book a suite for more space, direct garden access and a relaxing whirlpool tub.
Dining is a real treat here. The restaurant is situated outside the hotel in what was originally a potting shed. It has been dubbed the Strawberry Fields Bistro as a nod to the Beatles who stayed here whilst touring back in the 1960s. The menu is an eclectic array of dishes, many of which are designed to be shared, and all of which are executed to perfection. The atmosphere is relaxed and convivial.
Thackray House may only have been open a short time, but the staff are brimming with enthusiasm for this stunning property's newest chapter and it's hard not to pick up their buzz. They are well-trained, smiley and clearly want this place to succeed. No doubt with their input it will do so!
