“A romantic ‘weekend treat’ gastropub, close to one of Northumberland’s prettiest beaches. Rooms are big and sexy, the decoration eclectic, and the food smart and hearty. Surrounded by lovely walks and peaceful countryside, too.”

Hotel Review

The Joiners Arms may look modest from the outside, but step inside to bold, fun and eclectic interiors. Perhaps best described as 'bohemian ski chalet', expect low timbered ceilings, timbered and exposed-stone walls, flagged floors, scrubbed wooden tables and mis-matched chairs, with crimson curtains and lampshades adding a touch of the bordello. Eat in the bar - near the fires on chilly days - or through the red velvet curtains in the dining room. The five bedrooms are spacious and languorous, with a definite 'boudoir' feel: deep-pile carpets, huge mirrors, and antique or vintage-style furnishings. Each is themed differently - perhaps French-rustic, Scottish country-house or Spanish bordello - while three have enormous 'baths-for-two' in the bedrooms; a drinks table conveniently at one side. Food is above-average pub classics from steaks to mussels, with the fish and chips, and fish chowder legendary for their size and freshness. Drinks include well-priced cocktails and a selection of locally brewed real ales. Staff are mainly local, very friendly and helpful, and will point you on your way to good walks and beaches; even where, with luck, to spot the Northern Lights. Low Newton beach is a 10-minute stroll; Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castles a 10- to 15-minute drive. It's a quiet getaway for both breezy, coastal walks and decadent pampering.
