“A historic Grade I-listed hotel dating back to 1220 set beside Malmesbury Abbey. Interiors are fun and stylish, yet retain the building's original features (think exposed beams and stonework, window seats and ancient fireplace) without any compromise on comfort. Fantastic food. A charming stay”

Hotel review

From the outside, The Old Bell Hotel fits in perfectly with its surroundings in the picturesque market town of Malmesbury. One might imagine it to be a quintessential English hotel but, step inside, and guests are greeted by something unexpected, yet exciting. The hotel’s Texan owners, Kim and Whit Hanks, who took it over in 2021, have done a tremendous job of refurbishing the hotel. From the (locally-made) giraffes in the entrance (a nod to Kim and Whit’s love of safaris) to the eclectic collection of art and antiques scattered around the hotel, the decor is both unique and quirky, with guests treated to a luxurious stay.

The 34 bedrooms and suites vary in size and style, but intricate, patterned wallpapers, bold fabrics and tiled bathrooms feature throughout. The same combination of decoration and comfort is found in the hotel’s four townhouses, perfect for families or friends staying away together. All accommodation options have Dyson hairdryers, a selection of teas and locally-roasted coffees with cafetière, Bramley products and extremely comfortable beds. Bedtime reading includes a history of the hotel – after all, it is said to be the oldest hotel in England – as well as a handy list of 20 things to do within 20 miles. The importance of the connection between the hotel and the local area is echoed throughout: flowers from the owners’ gardens decorate the restaurant tables, there’s plenty of local produce on the menu and the hotel hosts various community events.

Food in the Abbey Row restaurant includes delicious and beautifully-presented dishes or guests can opt for tapas-style food in the Tiki-themed Tyger bar, now with an outdoor kitchen. Daily papers, board games, wellies – including giraffe boots for children, in keeping with the animal theme – are all on hand for guests.
